The most number of independent institutions of education in the U.S.A are in Hawaii. It is also home to four major schools that are independent. Hawaii also has the second Buddhist High School in U.S.A the first one being the Developing Virtue Secondary School in California built in 1981.This one was built in 2003.

These independent schools can choose the students they take in. This is quite the opposite of the way regular schools work where they have to take all the students of a district.

Amongst colleges or institutions of further studies, the University of Hawaii System is the largest and the most popular.

Currently, this is the only state in the U.S where there is uniformity in the school systems all across the state. A statewide educational policy is set by the board of education and a superintendent of schools is kept to keep a check of the functioning of the Department of Education.

The Department of Education's functioning and the structure has been a debatable topic for long; the main reason being the school funding. In other parts of the country it is a lot different. There, the schools are funded by the local property taxes.

A lot of initiative has been taken over the years to decentralize it all. Plans are being made to replace the statewide common board with different ones as elected. Also, schools will be given more freedom in terms of taking decisions. Even budgeting is planned to be according to the schools needs and the freedom is given to the school to do it for their own selves. The debates may carry on for a long time now. We can only wait and hope for the best for the youth of Hawaii and hope they have a very bright future.
